Once again in 2008, Trent FM became the media partner for the Cancer Research UK Race For Life which is a 5km women only charity race designed to raise funds for research into women’s cancer. In 2006 Trent FM received an award from cancer Research UK for our help in promoting their events in Nottinghamshire. In 2007 Trent FM was the chosen media partner to publicise the 3 Cancer Research UK events.
We also regularly visit and open charitable fairs, open days and fetes with the Trent FM Thunder Crew. In the last twelve months, we have attended approximately 200 such events in the Nottinghamshire area.
In December 2006 we joined national charity When You Wish Upon A Star to take 100 terminally ill children to Lapland, and regularly support the charity in their fundraising efforts. When You Wish Upon A Star are based in Nottingham. We once again lent support to the charity by creating a fundraising ale for sale in the run up to Christmas 2007, as well as promoting the Great Nottingham Santa Run. Our programming team join the charity on December 12th to report on their annual flight to Lapland.
In December 2006, Trent FM launched the Jo & Twiggy Tower Of Toys Appeal, hoping to collect over 30 thousand toys for local disadvantaged children, also for CLIC Sargent charity. As part of the appeal Trent FM built a giant tower in the centre of Nottingham for 7 days highlighting the appeal and raising awareness of the charities involved.
In the Autumn of 2007 Trent FM launched a campaign to re-address the negative publicity from the Channel 4 programme placing Nottingham as the fourth worst place to live in the UK. The station gathered local people into the Old Market Square to demonstrate with a giant placard promoting the positive message from Nottingham.
November/December 2007 saw Trent FM lend its support to a lottery funding bid for Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre, which had been shortlisted with 3 other national sites to receive £50 million of funding. The celebrity backed campaign saw Trent FM teaming up with Robin Hood stars Brian Blessed and Jonas Armstrong to gain public support.
10. Recent programme and/or news highlights
Trent FM have spearheaded a campaign to re-install pride in Nottingham following a period of press negativity. Teaming up with Experience Nottinghamshire and Nottingham Building Society Trent FM's "Proud of Nottingham" campaign aims to make people feel proud about the city in which they live and to make people see that there is more to Nottingham than the press portray.
As part of our Proud of Nottingham campaign we successfully helped raise the England flag over Nottingham Castle after petitioning Nottingham City Council to support England in their World Cup campaign.
During June ‘07 we embarked on a programming initiative to find Nottinghamshire's brainiest business in what we entitled the "Nottinghamshire Work Cup". Hourly we pitted company against company asking them general knowledge, music, local based questions. Over a 4 week period we had over 200 local businesses taking part and online featured a profile of every single contestant. The contest culminated in the presentation of the "Work Cup" as well as giving the winning company a victory party for 50 and a family holiday abroad to the person representing the winning company.
At Trent FM we are part of the 'Child Rescue Alert (CRA)' initiative. This is an arrangement between media and the police when it's believed a child's been abducted and he/she will be seriously hurt.
A CRA would ask our listeners for their help in finding the whereabouts of the child as quickly as possible and so, maybe saving his/her life. The aim is that the kidnapper hears the appeal, realises that everyone is looking for the child and lets him/her go.
Trent FM's newsroom would be called by local police and asked to activate a CRA only under certain circumstances; these can be viewed by clicking the CRA link below.
Trent FM in February/March 2007 were chosen by Nottingham City Council as the media partner for the inaugural Nottingham’s Proud Of You Awards. The council chose Trent FM to spearhead the nomination and voting process in the city’s first ever awards programme which recognises and rewards the local community. This content was hosted on the radio stations website trentfm.co.uk.
Trent FM's Jo & Twiggy were awarded the Euradio Award for Best European Breakfast Show, while their production team of Mark Hitchings and Programme Controller Dick Stone were named as Best European Producers.
In 2008 Jo & Twiggy were nominated again for the annual Sony radio Awards in the category of Entertainment and Best Breakfast show. This is the 8th year Jo & twiggy have been nominated in the Sony Awards.
